"De Pleintjes" is a documentary about Antwerp's street football culture. Rough areas such as Het Kiel, Borgerhout, Deurne and Stuivenberg are the backdrops to the social lives of thousands of youngsters. It's these areas where they grow up, learn about the world, and above all, dream of a better future.

Ruthless businessman Tommy Callaghan orders two of his most trusted couriers to collect a locked case - the contents of which he hopes will forge a powerful alliance with a mysterious new mafia force from Belgium. Kawalerowicz took 3 years to make this film, with his wife playing an architect on the verge of the menopause who sees a possible avenue of escape from a stale marriage. Though well-received initially, it was not widely seen on account of the student unrest that had broken out in 1968, leading to a government crackdown and a slew of sackings in the film industry. This was when Kawalerowicz was fired as head of the Kadr unit.

It’s the typical boy-meets-girl game, but played without rules and at a time when the boy must prove himself. Touching on the subject of teenage sexuality, the film shows that the game often starts with a challenge to the boy’s masculine ego from his peers.
